Rui L. Reis, director of the 3B’s Research Group of the EEUM, was elected president of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS). This is the main worldwide society in the area, gathering members from over 90 countries.
The Portuguese researcher is Vice-President of TERMIS since 2013. From the 1st of January 2016, Rui L. Reis will be world President of this Society until 2018. He had already acted as TERMIS President for Europe from 2010 to 2012.
The election of the world president is carried out online by all members of the Society. Rui L. Reis is the third elected President of TERMIS, and the first with research activity based on an European university: UMinho, where he is vice-rector for research and leads the 3B’s - Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics Research Group and the Associate Laboratory ICVS/3B’s. Rui L. Reis is also editor in chief of the scientific journal with the highest impact factor in the area, the Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (Wiley-Blackwell).
Rui L. Reis is one of the youngest fellows ever
The election was announced last week during the TERMIS World Conference, in Boston, USA. During the event, which takes place every three years, the new international fellows in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine were also nominated. Rui L. Reis was one of the five scientists granted the title of fellow. The fellows’ college is presently composed of 33 researchers, including the major pioneering leaders in this scientific area. The full professor of the School of Engineering of the UMinho is one of the youngest fellows ever and the first Portuguese researcher to be part of the college.
TERMIS created the fellow title to recognize an individuals’ role in shaping the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine field. TERMIS thus acknowledges that “the contributions of the research carried out by professor Rui L. Reis have helped establishing the pillars of conceptualizing, discovering, developing and clinically transferring new approaches for tissue replacement in a functional way which can be of the utmost importance to the future of Medicine. The Society also recognises his involvement and dedication, bearing in mind that he continues to encourage and train a new generation of scientists and clinical staff, which will in turn continue to make progress in this scientific area and further develop the core principles of the subject. His condition of world leader in this activity area is also appreciated.
